Apu Ramesh

I am a behavioural biologist fascinated by why animals and humans behave the way they do. My research focuses on understanding the vast diversity in thoughts, motivations, and behaviours among individuals—what we call personality. I am currently developing an integrated methodological and conceptual framework for studying personality across animals and humans. By combining empirical field and laboratory studies with theoretical and statistical modelling, I aim to uncover the principles that shape complex behavioural systems. I am a strong advocate for open science and best practices in research, and I love statistics.

Outside of science, I am deeply drawn to music and art. I enjoy singing and exploring diverse musical traditions, and I am currently pursuing linocut printing. I am fascinated by the parallels and contrasts between science and art—how exploration and individuality often drive discovery in art, while science progresses through incremental, cumulative understanding, with major breakthroughs still emerging at the nexus of creativity and curiosity. Reflecting on these different modes of creativity continually inspires both my scientific and artistic practice.
